Alpine – The Big Bend Conservation Alliance (BBCA) is pleased to announce the appointment of James “J.D.” Newsom as Executive Director. Born and raised in Midland, J.D. grew up surfing the Monahans Sandhills, swimming at Balmorhea, camping at the Buffalo Trail Scout Ranch, and hiking through Big Bend National Park. “J.D.’s passion for the region, as well as his incredible experience managing non-profits made him an ideal candidate for the job,” said BBCA board member, Matt Lara.
Mr. Newsom has served as Chief Operating Officer for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Fort Worth and Vice President of Operations for Refugee Services of Texas. He has managed budgets totaling over $13 million in annual revenue, created effective public relations and advocacy campaigns, and handled delicate issues, such as refugee resettlement in the Texas Panhandle. According to Mr. Lara, “J.D.’s experience with building consensus around tough issues was a huge selling point in hiring him for the work we do here in the Big Bend.”
With assistance from several consultants over the years, BBCA has operated as an all-volunteer organization since 2015. With J.D. at the helm, BBCA is looking forward to expanding efforts in the Alliance’s five program areas: Land, Water, Dark Skies, Cultural Resources, and Growth & Industrial Development.
J.D. and his wife Laura have purchased a house in Sunny Glen and look forward to making their home here in the Big Bend. “My wife, Laura, and I are eager to join the Alpine and greater Big Bend community. As a West Texas native, I couldn’t be happier to put down roots in the region. I am thankful to the Board of Directors for this remarkable opportunity to lead the Big Bend Conservation Alliance,” said Mr. Newsom.
