Scenic America

Scenic America is proud to announce that their 2014 Conference will take place on Friday April 11 at the Magnolia Hotel in downtown Houston. For a draft agenda and to register go to:http://www.scenic.org/houston2014.

Hosted by Scenic Texas and Scenic Houston, the theme of the conference is: How scenic beauty supports economic development, livability and tourism. Featured speakers include Houston Mayor Annise Parker, developer Gerald Hines, sociologist Stephen Klineberg, multimedia artist Barnaby Evans and many other accomplished individuals.

Speakers will highlight real life examples from around the country where initiatives such as investing in scenic roadways and tree lined parkways, promoting corporate visual responsibility, defining design standards and prohibiting new billboards has created increased market value for real estate, expanded tourism and enhanced neighborhood livability and quality of life.

The group is choosing to meet in Houston because of its strong local affiliates and because the city represents the kind of success that happens when civic, business and community leaders make incorporating scenic beauty into planning and design a priority. In just one example, the city banned new billboards in 1980 which has resulted in the elimination of thousands of billboards (most that remain are protected by federal law!). You’ll learn more about this victory and about other ways you can reduce visual pollution and encourage scenic beauty in your community at Scenic America’s 2014 Conference!
